Pregãos – announcements in Portuguese

Pregãos - announcements can be made (172L):

During Shacharit: after Kaddish Titkabal. On Days of Torah Reading: before Hanotin.
Between Mincha and Arvit (JBS: together): between the two prayers before Utshu’at.
In the Omer (JBS: Mincha and Arvit separately) during Mincha after Kaddish Titkabal and during Arvit before the start, on which the verse Utshu’at is repeated by the Chazzan.
During Arvit: between the Kaddish and the Amidah and after the tefillah.

The numbers in brackets refer to the page in Seder Hazzanut Brandon where this Pregão is mentioned. E.g. (174L) refers to page 174, left column.
The pregãos regarding tefillah starting times are mostly left out. They can be made at the various points and are only done if the time is not fixed e.g. Mincha Friday (178R) or deviates from the standard time e.g. on Purim (203R). Example: “Mincha se rezará esta tarde a xxx hora”, where xxx is can be found elsewhere on this site [0].

Since the 1980’s, the pregãos are said in Portuguese and repeated in Dutch, English and Hebrew. JSB made list of translations of the most impotent pregãos without English and phonetic Hebrew. JBS made a new version solving these shortcomings.

A printable version van be downloaded.

[0] Mind that e.g. on page 182R Mincha on 8 Ab is announced to be at 12:30. Before the war, The Netherlands had its own time zone. During ww2, CET time was introduced, adding 40 minutes. So in the winter the earliest Mincha time is at 13:10 and in the summer at 14:10 due to summertime adding another hour.

[1]  as Yom Tov has its own assignments of mitzvoth (honors), it is announced that the mitsvot assignment of Shabbat is valid for all other days of Torah reading during the week

[2]  Only on page 179R it says “resto”, in this case the last two days of Pesach are on Shabbat and Sunday.

[3]  The pregão is only mentioned, not written on page 204L

[4]  Now we (also) announce this on Shabbat together with the pregão of the Sunday Shacharit time.

[5]  According to Brandon 175L, this is said only if it is Friday night, But Nabarro has it for every 1st evening of Rosh Chodesh (NN tape 19 minute 20:04)

[6]  The pregão is only mentioned, not written on page 178R
