Life cycle – sickness and Avelut

This page presents the services related to the sickness and Avelut (mourning).

Customs for sickness and mourning (Dutch and English translation)
HaGomeel: sometimes one must say the Berachah of haGomeel (הגומל), in the green Tefillot on page 209 and in the ומחה דמעה prayer book on page 106. This Berachah can be said when a man is called to the Torah or before the open Heichal. To be able to say haGomeel, there must be a Minjan.
A lady who says haGomeel comes down after the service. She herself opens the Heichal to say the haGomeel. The Chazzan will say the pregao (מי שברך), after which the lady closes the Heichal.

Extra prayer when Avelim (mourners) come to the Snoge – כשיש אבלות בקהל. The Avelim are sitting on the low bench behind the Tebah and two candles are lit. The service is as usual, not as at the Aveel’s home. At the end of the services צידיק הדין, השכבה בילע המות are added (short Hashkavah). In the morning this replaces the verses עץ חיים, ended with קדיש יהא שלמא by all Avelim.
