Musaf Medianos

This page describes the Musaf service for Medianos Pesach (Chol hamoed) and Sukkot, including Hoshana Rabbah. For Shabbat Medianos, see Musaf Rechalim.

All are standing during Kaddish, Avelim do not say kadish on Medianos.

On Medianos Sukkot we hold the Lulav from the start of Musaf and keep it till the end of the Hosha'anot. On Hosana Rabbah we remove the bow from the Lulav.

The Chazzan continues aloud [2] Whilst the Chazzan reads Modim uninterrupted, the congregants say Modim derabanan silently. After the Bircat Cohanim, the appointed Levador(es), carriers, take out the Sefer/Sefarim and go to the Tebah. The Acompanador, going in front, must assure they reach the Tebah before the Chazzan finishes ועל כל ישראל, אמן	101 101 101-102		רצה ...לך נאה להודות חזן: ברכת כהנים שים שלום .. ועל כל ישראל, אמן
הושענות Medianos Sukkot. The Sefer Hoshanot is brought to the Tebah. On Hoshana Rabbah seven [3] sefarim are taken out. The Chazzan takes place in the left corner of the Tebah and starts הושענה The Hakafot order is: Chazzan first, followed by the Haham or Dayan, the Parnassim & congregants with Lulav (Cohanim first). The Chazzan starts walking after saying לא יתמו שנותיו לדור דורים, הושענה הושענה. He plans to say the last few words of אנא when arriving at the gate of the Hechal. The exact starting words can be found in the table below. When back on the Tebah he continues הושענה הושענה.

Hakafot for Hosana Rabbah

The Hakafot order is: Chazzan first, followed by the Haham or Dayan, the Parnassim & congregants with Lulav (Cohanim first).
The Chazzan starts walking the first Hakafa after saying לא יתמו שנותיו לדור דורים, הושענה הושענה. The other Hakafot he starts walking immediately. He plans to say the last few words of אנא when arriving at the gate of the Hechal. The exact starting words can be found in the table below. When back on the Tebah he continues הושענה הושענה.

In each Hakafa, after the 13 Midot (page 132, 5 lines from the bottom) תרש"ת is blown on the Shofar and the words תודיעני (page 141) are said.

Starting 3 lines from the bottom The Sefere Hoshanot are brought back to the Hechal. The procession returns to the Hechal in teh following order: Acompanhador, Levadores, Chazzan, Parnas. Sefer Minhagim, Shelomo Levi Maduro, Amsterdam 1775

[1] According to Seder Hazzanut Brandon (page 192L) the RV (Rustende Voorganger, the not active Chazzan) is the one to stay. However, since ww2 we have only one Chazzan, so the Shamash takes his place. MOET OOK BIJ MOESAF JT

[2] From yihyu leratson chazzan reads silently. The Congregation says the Amen slowly, to finish when the Chazzan starts the Hoshana.

[3] Post ww2 this was reduced to three.

[4] This is done, but not mentioned in any of the Mo’adim prayer books, nor in the various Seder Hazzanut manuscripts. The only manuscript I found it in is ספר חשק שלמה The Hague 1767: נפשט המנהג לחבט את הערבה בארץ. In Thesouro dos Dimin by Menasseh ben Israel (1645 & 1710) does mention it (page 111 in 1710 edition).
Possibly this minhag was introduced by Haham Pereira, and brought from The Hague, where he was Haham before the war. Mind that the only source is from The Hague. There is no proof for this theory and no way to verify, as that generation is no longer with us. See also blowing during Selichot HR.
