Duchan (Bircat Kohanim)

Kohanim take off shoes and their hands are washed by Levi’im or in their absence, by Bechorim (eldest) between the Kedusha and Retseh. At Retseh they take their place in front of, and facing the Heichal. When the Chazzan reads “Ha’El hatov”, they cover their head with the Tallith.

If there are multiple Kohanim, the Chazzan starts with “Kohanim”, else the Koheen starts directly with the Beracha.
Kohanim facing the Heichal. After the Beracha, Kohanim turn, facing the congregation. The texts between brackets are recited by the congregation
(ברוך הוא וברוך שמו)
אלהינו מלך העולם אשר קדשנו בקדשתו של אהרון, וצונו, לברך את עמו ישראל באהבה
(אמן)
If there is a single Koheen, the Chazzan sings “Yevarechecha” and the Koheen repeats. If there are multiple Kohanim they themselves start with “Yevarechecha”.
On the Shabbat of the inauguration (Nachamu in Amsterdam and Beshalach in Amstelveen) the high melody is sung.

Remark: The Duchan (Bircat Kohanim, Priestly Blessing) was introduced in the 17th century when many members of the Amsterdam Portuguese community believed that Shabtai Zwi was the Mashiach (messiah). The Minhag was kept even though it became clear he was a false Mashiach. See Liber Amicorum voor Opperrabbijn A. Schuster, ISBN 90.232.0738.6 p.p. 61

[1] Grayed areas indicate parts, which are not for regular Shabbatot. Follow hyperlinks for recordings.

[2] These are some examples, many more exists. melodies of אין כאלקינ’ו can be used

[3] Tsisit are kissed (only) three times. The singing of Shemang on Shabbat morning and Jom Tob was introduced in the 1970’s by rabbi Drukarch, as he noted that some (new) visitors couldn’t read, not even say Shemang. By introducing it to be sung, he made it easy for them to learn this most important prayer. This also explains why it is missing on the NN tapes, as these were made earlier. It was stopped during the Corona epidemic (2020-2021) but resumed afterwards

[4] Winter = from Shmini Atseret till first day of Pesach, summer is the complement.

[5] These are some examples, many more exists.

[6] In case there is no minjan, Hallel bedilug, as on rosh chodesh, is said without beracha.

[7] Any Hallel melody for Rosh Chodesh can be used.
