Limud for MeldaduraMany Spanish-Sephardic communities know the ritual of Meldadura or Meldado[a]. This ritual took place on the “Yahrtzeit”, the yearly remembrance date of a person. In essence, each year on that day, a minjan was gathered and a limud (learning ceremony) was held, see כתר שם טוב חלק ב, עמוד תרסז סעיף כז. Meldadura comes from Meldar, which means “learning sacred Hebrew texts”. In our community 16 members donated a legacy in favor of their ever-lasting Meldadura, pronounced as “Meldadure”. These meldadura’s were carried out by the students of Ets Haim, see Reviving the soul of the community, ISBN 978-90-829674-0-1 page 19. In the sixties of the last century meldadura’s were organized by mr S. (Sam) Behar (SB), one of the two post WW2 talmidim (pupils) of Ets Haim, but unfortunately over time it became difficult to gather minjan. Therefore the Meldadura’s were associated to a few individuals, but in due time that stopped too. I recovered the list of the deceased and the order of the Meldadura from Behar.
